How Many Pints in a Gram?

Find out what one pint of the food weighs in grams, then divide your grams by that number. The divisor in the formula above is a US pint of water. Whole milk needs a bigger divisor, about 488, and all-purpose flour a much smaller one, about 250.

With milk, 1,200 g works out to 1,200 ÷ 488 = 2.46 US pints. In imperial pints the same milk comes to 2.05, because the British pint is larger.

Pints are big next to grams, so this conversion is most useful for amounts of half a kilogram or more. For smaller weights, grams to cups gives friendlier numbers.

A British pint is 568 ml and an American pint 473 ml, so the same weight makes fewer UK pints. 2 kg of water fills 4.23 US pints but only 3.52 imperial pints.

When a recipe gives a weight and you plan to measure in pints, use the pint your jug is marked in. Mixing the two can put you off by a fifth of the total.

A pint holds the same space whatever you pour in, so a gram count turns into pints only once you know how bulky the food is. Compact foods need little room per gram, and loose, springy ones need a lot.

500 g of butter fills about 1.1 US pints. The same weight of shredded cheese fills about 2.21 pints, twice the space, because the shreds sit loosely on top of each other.

A quick conversion tells you how many pint tubs to set out before you start. 1 kg of whole raw blueberries fills about 3.38 US pints, so four containers will do with room to spare.

For a liquid that weighs about the same as water, 2 kg fills about 4.23 US pints. Leave space at the top of each tub, since water expands when it freezes (USGS).
