How Many Grams in a Pint?

Multiply the pints by the weight of one pint of your ingredient. The formula above gives that weight for water, and the converter holds the figures for other foods.

A US pint of whole milk weighs about 488 g, so 3 pt of milk comes to 3 × 488 = 1,464 g. Dry foods follow the same logic with smaller numbers. A US pint holds 2 cups, and USDA puts a cup of all-purpose (plain) flour at 125 g, so a pint of flour weighs about 250 g.

A pint in a British recipe is bigger than a pint in an American one. The table below gives both sizes, and the weight of anything poured into them grows in step.

An imperial pint of water weighs 568 g, compared with the US figure in the answer above. So if a UK recipe asks for a pint of stock, weigh out the imperial amount, not the US one.

A pint is a fixed amount of space, but foods fill it in different ways. Liquids settle into every corner, while flour, sugar and shredded cheese leave air between the grains and shreds.

Whole fruit leaves even bigger gaps. A US pint of raw blueberries weighs only about 296 g, far less than a pint of milk.

Berry baskets are a special case. US rules let fresh fruit be sold by dry measure (21 CFR 101.7), and the dry pint is larger than the liquid pint (NIST Handbook 44, Appendix C). A full dry-pint basket can therefore hold more berries than the figure above.
