How to convert grams to cups
cups = grams ÷ 236.588
Example: 250 g ÷ 236.588 = 1.057 cups.
Divide the grams by the weight of one cup of the same ingredient. The divisor above is the one for water, and flour, sugar and butter each have their own in the table below. The cups to grams page covers the reverse trip.
Say a British sponge recipe asks for 175 g of sugar. With USDA's cup of granulated sugar at 200 grams, that is 175 ÷ 200 = 0.875 cup, or 7/8 cup. The same recipe's 225 g of flour comes to 1.8 cups, just over 1 3/4 cups.
Round to the nearest fraction your measuring set has. If the set has no 1/8 cup measure, use 2 tablespoons for that last bit.
US vs UK cups
Cups in British, Australian and Canadian recipes are usually the 250 ml metric cup, while US recipes use the smaller US cup. This page gives US cups. With a metric cup set, the cup count comes out slightly lower for the same grams.
For example, 125 g of all-purpose flour fills exactly one US cup by USDA figures, but only about 0.95 of a metric cup. Check which set you own before you measure.
| Unit | Size | Used in |
|---|---|---|
| US cup | 236.6 ml | US |
| US legal cup | 240 ml | US nutrition labels |
| metric cup | 250 ml | UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand |
Why weight depends on the ingredient
The same number of grams fills very different amounts of cup. Take 300 g: as granulated sugar it fills 1.5 cups, as all-purpose flour 2.4 cups, and as shredded cheese 2.65 cups.
The lighter and fluffier a food is, the more room each gram needs. That is why a metric recipe converted with the water divisor comes out wrong for almost everything except water, milk and other thin liquids.
| Ingredient | 1 g = |
|---|---|
| All-purpose flour | 0.008 cup |
| Granulated sugar | 0.005 cup |
| Butter | 0.004405 cup |
| Milk | 0.004098 cup |
| Powdered sugar | 0.008333 cup |
| Shredded cheese | 0.00885 cup |
Measuring flour without a scale
When you have to use cups for a recipe written in grams, how you fill the cup matters as much as the math. Stir the flour in its bag to loosen it, spoon it into the cup until it mounds, then sweep the top flat with the back of a knife.
Scooping straight from the bag presses flour into the cup, so you end up with more flour than the conversion expects. USDA does not say how its cups were filled, so treat any cup figure for flour as a close guide rather than an exact match.
Grams and cups: questions
How many cups is 100 grams?
It depends on the ingredient. 100 g of granulated sugar fills exactly half a cup by USDA figures. The same weight of all-purpose flour is about 0.8 cup, a little over 3/4 cup, and of butter about 0.441 cup, just under half a cup.
How many cups is 200 grams of sugar?
It is 1 cup of granulated sugar, since USDA lists a cup at 200 grams. That makes sugar one of the easiest conversions to remember. 200 g of all-purpose flour is a different story: about 1.6 cups.
What is 125 grams in cups?
For all-purpose flour, 125 g is one US cup by USDA figures. The same weight of granulated sugar is 0.625 cup, which is 5/8 cup, and of powdered sugar (icing sugar) a little over one cup.
How much is half a cup in grams?
About 118 grams of water, 62.5 grams of all-purpose flour, 100 grams of granulated sugar and 114 grams of butter. Each food weighs a different amount, so pick the one in your recipe.
How much is a quarter cup in grams?
About 59.1 grams of water, 31.3 grams of all-purpose flour, 50 grams of sugar and 56.8 grams of butter. A quarter cup is also 4 tablespoons, which helps when you only have spoons; grams to tablespoons handles amounts that small.
