Grams to Pounds (g to lb)

Divide the grams by 453.592, or multiply them by 0.00220462. A 1,500 g roast comes to 3.307 lb, and a parcel weighing 2,300 g comes to 5.071 lb. Two or three decimal places are enough, since a thousandth of a pound is less than half a gram.

For small amounts, decimal pounds get hard to read: 60 g is only 0.1323 lb. Below a pound or so, ounces are easier to picture, so try grams to ounces for spice jars and snack bags.

To write a gram weight as pounds plus ounces, take three steps:

1. Divide the grams by 453.592. The whole number in the answer is the pounds.
2. Multiply those whole pounds by 453.592 and subtract the result from the grams.
3. Divide the grams that are left by 28.3495 to get the ounces.

Take a newborn weighed at 3,400 g. Step one gives 7.496, so the baby weighs 7 lb and a bit.

Seven pounds are 3,175.1 g, which leaves 224.9 g. That remainder is 7.9 oz, so the birth weight reads 7 lb 7.9 oz.

Yes, by about a tenth. 1,000 g is 2.205 lb, while a 2 lb bag holds 907 g. When you compare pack sizes on a shelf, convert both to the same unit before you look at the price.

The same check works for smaller packs. A 425 g can is 0.937 lb, a little less than the 1 lb can a US recipe may assume.
