How Many Pounds in a Kilogram?

Multiply the kilograms by 2.20462. An 18 kg suitcase weighs 39.68 lb, and an 85 kg person weighs 187.4 lb. One decimal place is plenty for body weight or luggage.

Round only at the end. Converting 72.4 kg gives 159.6 lb, but rounding the reading to 72 kg first gives 158.7 lb, almost a pound less. To go the other way, divide by the same factor or use pounds to kilograms.

Five decimal places are more than enough. With 2.20462, the error stays below a thousandth of a pound for anything up to 100 kg.

Multiply by 2.20462 to get decimal pounds. Keep the whole pounds, then multiply the decimal part by 16 to turn it into ounces.

A 6.2 kg turkey is 13.669 pounds. The whole part is 13 lb, and 0.669 × 16 gives about 10.7 oz, so the bird weighs 13 lb 10.7 oz. The same steps turn a 3.5 kg parcel into 7 lb 11.5 oz.

Gym plates and dumbbells marked in kilograms convert the same way. Plates stamped 25 kg, 20 kg and 10 kg weigh 55.12 lb, 44.09 lb and 22.05 lb.

A 20 kg plate is a little lighter than a 45 lb plate, which is 20.41 kg. For a loaded bar, sum the plates in kilograms, then convert the total in one go.

In Britain, body weight is often given in stones of 14 pounds; NIST notes that the stone is still in common use there for that purpose. Convert the kilograms to pounds, then take out whole stones.
