Ounces to Kilograms (oz to kg)

Divide the ounces by 35.274, or multiply them by 0.02834952. A 28 oz can of tomatoes weighs 0.7938 kg, and a 50 oz bag of rice weighs 1.417 kg.

If long decimals feel awkward, go through grams. Multiply by 28.35 to get grams, then divide by 1,000: 40 oz becomes 1,134 g, which is 1.134 kg.

Both routes give the same answer. Round to two or three decimal places, since a thousandth of a kilogram is a single gram.

These steps apply to ounces of weight. A bottle marked in fluid ounces states a volume, so its weight depends on the liquid: 64 fl oz of water weighs about 1.89 kg, while oil or syrup would weigh a different amount. For the volume itself, use ounces to liters.

When a shipping or customs form wants kilograms but your scale reads ounces, weigh each item, add the ounces, and convert the total once. A sweater of 14 oz, a book of 11.5 oz and a box with its packing of 7 oz come to 32.5 oz, which is 0.9214 kg.

If the scale shows pounds and ounces, turn the pounds into ounces first: 2 lb 5 oz is 2 × 16 + 5 = 37 oz, or 1.049 kg. Round up rather than down, so the declared weight is never lower than what is in the box.
