How to convert ounces to grams
grams = ounces × 28.3495
Example: 12 oz × 28.3495 = 340.2 g.
Multiply the ounces by 28.3495. A 6 oz can of tomato paste holds 170.1 g, and 2.5 oz of parmesan is 70.9 g.
Rounding the factor to 28 keeps mental math simple, but it makes every answer about 1% low. On 8 oz that shortcut gives 224 instead of 226.8, a gap you can ignore in soup but may notice in a cake.
Only weight ounces convert straight to grams. If a bottle or recipe says fluid ounces (fl oz), it is measuring volume, so use ounces to milliliters instead.
Why do US labels show both ounces and grams?
Federal packaging law requires both. The Fair Packaging and Labeling Act was amended in 1992 to require metric units on packages, so US packs usually state their net weight twice (NIST: Packaging and Labeling).
A bag marked 16 oz therefore also shows about 454 g, and a 5.3 oz cup of yogurt shows about 150 g. When a recipe asks for part of a pack, the gram figure is often easier to split: half of that 16 oz bag is 227 g.
The gram figure also helps with recipes from abroad. A British or European recipe that asks for 200 g of chocolate can be matched against the metric line on a US wrapper, with no ounce math at all.

Is 1 oz equal to 30 grams?
Not exactly. Thirty grams is a rounded shortcut that runs about 6% high. On 8 oz of chocolate, the shortcut asks for 240 g instead of 227 g, which is enough to change a recipe.
Is an ounce 28 or 32 grams?
Neither exactly, but 28 is far closer: it falls only about a third of a gram short. Even the heavier troy ounce, the unit NIST lists for precious metal sales, is only 31.1 g, still short of 32.
Is 4 oz the same as 100 g?
No. 4 oz is 113.4 g, about 13% more than 100 g. If a recipe written in ounces asks for 4 oz of butter, weigh out about 113 g, not 100.
How much does 1 oz weigh in grams?
