Ounces to Quarts (oz to qt)

Divide the US fluid ounces by 32. Kitchen cartons make easy examples: 48 fl oz of juice is 1.5 quarts, and 100 fl oz of iced tea is 3.125 quarts.

For amounts under a quart, count cups instead of decimals. Every 8 fl oz is one cup and 4 cups fill a quart, so 24 fl oz is three cups, or 0.75 quart.

Whatever is left after the whole quarts stays in ounces. 80 fl oz makes two quarts plus 16 fl oz, which is 2.5 quarts as a decimal.

To turn British fluid ounces into British quarts, divide by 40 instead of 32. The imperial quart holds more ounces, and each of them is slightly smaller than a US fluid ounce.

Mixing the systems throws the answer off. A US quart fills only 0.8327 of an imperial quart, so a quart of stock in a British recipe takes more than one American quart carton.

A carton labeled 32 fl oz holds exactly one quart, so a recipe that calls for a quart of stock or buttermilk needs one such carton. Two cartons of 16 fl oz do the same job, and so do four cups.

Watch for the words net weight. A tub marked in weight ounces is weighed, not measured, and it only turns into quarts if you know how dense the food is; ounces to pounds handles the weight side. Airy foods show the gap best: USDA data puts a quart of shredded cheese at only about 15.9 ounces.
