What is a quart?
The quart is a quarter of a gallon, as its name suggests. In the US you meet it on cartons of milk and broth, on motor oil, and in recipes for soups and stocks.
A US liquid quart holds 32 fluid ounces. Britain's imperial quart, still found in older recipes, is built the same way from imperial pints, which makes it about a fifth larger (NIST Handbook 44, Appendix C).
How to remember cups, pints, quarts and gallons
One memory aid is the "big G" drawing. Draw a large G for gallon, put four Qs inside for quarts, two Ps in each Q for pints, and two Cs in each P for cups.
Counting the letters gives the whole ladder: 4 quarts in a gallon, 2 pints in a quart and 2 cups in a pint. That also means a quart holds 4 cups, and a gallon holds 16 cups.
The gallon, quart and pint steps work the same way in imperial measure, with each unit about a fifth larger. Cups do not fit that chain, since British recipes use the metric cup.

Is 32 oz a quart?
Yes, for liquids in US measure: 32 fl oz is exactly 1 quart, and 64 fl oz makes 2 quarts, or half a gallon. If the ounces are weight, as on a 32 oz tub of yogurt, the quart figure depends on the food.
How many glasses of water are in a quart?
A quart fills 4 glasses if each holds 1 cup. Glasses are not a standard unit, though, so a bigger tumbler of 12 fl oz fills only about 2.7 times from a quart.
Is a dry quart the same as a liquid quart?
No. The US keeps a separate dry quart for dry goods measured by volume, and it holds noticeably more than the liquid quart (NIST Handbook 44, Appendix C). US food labels that give dry measure use bushels, pecks, dry quarts and dry pints (21 CFR 101.7).
Is a UK quart bigger than a US quart?
Yes. An imperial quart equals 1.201 quarts in US measure. That is also why an imperial quart is a little more than a liter, while a US quart is a little less.
