How to convert quarts to tablespoons
tablespoons = quarts × 64
Example: 3 qt × 64 = 192 tbsp.
Multiply the quarts by 64. That factor is the kitchen chain in one step: 4 cups per quart and 16 tablespoons per cup.
Nobody spoons out a whole quart, so the number is most useful for ratios. If a brine calls for 4 tablespoons of salt per quart of water, each cup of water gets 1 tablespoon, and a full gallon needs 1 cup of salt.
The same factor tells you what share of a pot a spoonful is. One tablespoon in a quart of soup is one part in 64, so each extra spoonful of a strong sauce shows up in the taste.
US vs UK quarts and tablespoons
A British quart is two imperial pints, or 1,137 ml, about a fifth more than a US quart of 946 ml. Filling one takes about 76.9 US tablespoons, or 56.8 Australian ones of 20 ml.
So a per-quart ratio from a British recipe is slightly milder than the same wording in a US recipe. The spoons are almost equal in size, but the imperial quart holds more water.
| Unit | Size | Used in |
|---|---|---|
| US quart | 946.4 ml | US |
| imperial quart | 1,137 ml | UK |
| US tablespoon | 14.79 ml | US |
| metric tablespoon | 15 ml | UK, Canada, New Zealand |
| Australian tablespoon | 20 ml | Australia |
How do you scale a per-quart recipe down?
Divide the tablespoons by the same factor as the liquid. A cup is 0.25 qt, so it gets a quarter of the per-quart amount, and a pint gets half.
With 3 tablespoons per quart, one cup needs 2 1/4 teaspoons and one pint needs 1 1/2 tablespoons. A single serving of 1/2 cup would get 1 1/8 teaspoons. Small results like these are easier to measure in teaspoons; see tablespoons to teaspoons.
Quarts and tablespoons: questions
How many tablespoons are in half a quart?
Half a quart holds 32 tablespoons. That is the same as one US pint, or 2 cups, so a two-cup liquid measure is the practical tool for it.
