How Many Quarts in a Pound?

A quart of whole milk weighs about 2.15 lb. So 6 lb of milk fills 6 ÷ 2.15 = 2.79 quarts, a bit less room than the same weight of water.

This conversion earns its keep when a pot, slow cooker or storage tub is sized in quarts. To go from quarts back to a weight, use quarts to pounds.

A UK quart equals 2 pints of the larger imperial size, so it holds more than a US quart, as the table below shows. A pound of water fills only 0.4 imperial quart.

A pot or slow cooker labeled in quarts has to hold the food and the liquid together. Weigh or estimate the solids, convert them to quarts, then add the liquid.

For example, 3 lb of diced raw potatoes takes up about 2.3 quarts. Add 2 qt of broth, and the total is already more than a 4 qt pot can hold. Leave extra room for stirring and simmering.
