How to convert kilograms to tons
tons = kilograms ÷ 907.185
Example: 70 kg ÷ 907.185 = 0.07716 ton.
Divide the kilograms by 907.185 to get US tons, also called short tons. 1,500 kg is 1.653 tons, and 12,000 kg is 13.23 tons.
The divisor comes straight from the definition. A US ton is 2,000 pounds, and each pound is fixed at 0.45359237 kg, so the ton weighs 907.18474 kg exactly.
Other tons need other divisors. For metric tons (tonnes), divide by 1,000, which only moves the decimal point: 12,000 kg is 12 metric tons. For British long tons, divide by 1,016.05.
Which ton does a document mean?
NIST Handbook 44 lists three tons of mass: the short ton of 2,000 pounds, the long ton of 2,240 pounds and the metric ton of 1,000 kilograms. It notes that the short ton is the usual one in the United States and Canada, the long ton in Great Britain, and the metric ton in countries that use the metric system.
The spelling "tonne" always means the metric ton. A tonne is about 10% heavier than a short ton, and a long ton about 12% heavier, so check which one a freight quote, a contract or a vehicle spec uses before you compare numbers.
The gap is easy to see on a single load. 20,000 kg is 20 metric tons, but it is also 22.05 tons and 19.68 long tons.
Kilograms and tons: questions
Is a ton 1,000 kg?
Only the metric ton, or tonne, is exactly 1,000 kg. A US short ton is lighter and a UK long ton is heavier: the long ton weighs 1,016 kg. If a document just says "ton", check which country's usage it follows.
What is the difference between a ton and a tonne?
In US usage, a ton is the short ton of 2,000 pounds. A tonne is the metric ton of 1,000 kilograms, which equals 2,205 lb. That makes the tonne about 10% heavier than a US ton.
How many tons is 5,000 kg?
5,000 kg is 5.512 tons in US tons, or exactly 5 metric tons. In UK long tons, it is 4.921 long tons. The answers differ by more than half a ton, so the unit matters.
How many kilograms is a long ton?
A long ton is 1,016 kg, the weight of 2,240 pounds. NIST also calls it the gross or shipper's ton, and notes that cargo tonnage in overseas trade is usually given in long tons or metric tons.
How do you convert tons back to kilograms?
Multiply US tons by 907.18474, long tons by 1,016.0469088, and metric tons by 1,000. For example, 2 tons come to 1,814 kg. The tons to kilograms converter does the US ton version for any amount.
How many tons is 100 kg?
100 kg is 0.1102 ton, about a tenth of a US ton. It takes a little over nine loads of 100 kg to make one US ton. In metric tons, the same amount is exactly 0.1 t.
