How to convert liters to grams
grams = liters × 1,000
Example: 1.5 L × 1,000 = 1,500 g.
Multiply the liters by the number of grams that one liter of the ingredient weighs. For water, use the factor in the formula above. For anything else, look up that food's own weight per liter first.
Whole milk weighs about 1,031 grams per liter by USDA figures. Half a liter, 0.5 L, therefore comes to 0.5 × 1,031 = 516 grams. A scale set to grams can then measure the milk straight into the mixing bowl.

Why weight depends on the ingredient
A liter is a fixed volume, so its weight tells you how dense a food is. Water sets the benchmark, and most kitchen staples land below it. Butter comes in a little lighter, at about 959 grams per liter, and granulated sugar at about 845 grams.
Fine powders drop much further. A liter of powdered sugar (icing sugar) weighs only about 507 grams, roughly half the water figure. Shredded cheese is lighter still, at about 478 grams per liter.

Does a liter of milk weigh a kilogram?
Slightly more. USDA data put a liter of whole milk at about 1,031 grams, and the values for 2% and 1% milk are the same per cup. If a recipe gives milk in liters and you weigh out a flat kilogram, you end up short by about the weight of 2 tablespoons of milk.
For a sauce or a custard that gap hardly matters. In a large batch of dough or in cheese making, where milk is the main ingredient, converting with the milk figure keeps the recipe on track.
