How to convert liters to gallons
gallons = liters ÷ 3.78541
Example: 1.5 L ÷ 3.78541 = 0.3963 gal.
Divide the liters by 3.785 to get US gallons. Multiplying by 0.2642 does the same job and is easier on some calculators.
A liter (litre) is roughly a quarter of a gallon, so dividing by four puts you in the right range. The true answer is a bit higher than a plain quarter: 40 liters come to 10.57 gal, and 25 liters come to 6.604 gal.

US vs UK gallons
British gallons are bigger, so the same liters make fewer of them. One liter is 0.22 imp gal, compared with 0.2642 gal in the US.
The difference shows up quickly on a car tank. A 50 L tank holds 13.21 US gallons but only 11 imperial ones. When a British source quotes gallons, divide by 4.546 instead.

Filling up where fuel is sold by the liter
If you drive abroad and the pump counts liters, convert the total to compare it with fill-ups at home. Topping up with 45 liters puts 11.89 gal in the tank.
Tank sizes work the same way. A car listed with a 60 L tank holds 15.85 gal.
To compare prices, multiply the price per liter by 3.785. The result is the price of one US gallon, before any change of currency.
Counting stored water in gallons
Ready.gov advises storing at least one gallon of water per person per day for several days. If your supply is in liter bottles, convert the total before you count the days.
Twelve bottles of 1 L hold 3.17 gal, which covers one person for three days by that guide. A 20 L water container holds 5.283 gal, enough for five person-days with a little to spare.

Almost: four liters are 1.057 gal, slightly more than one US gallon. Against a British gallon the same four liters fall short, at 0.8799 imp gal. So four liter bottles fill a US gallon jug with a little left over.
How many gallons is 20 liters?
Twenty liters equal 5.283 gal, a little over five US gallons. A jerrycan marked 20 L therefore holds slightly more than a 5 gal bucket. In imperial measure it is 4.399 gallons.
How many gallons is 2 liters?
Two liters make 0.5283 gal, just over half a US gallon. That is easier to picture as 2.113 quarts or 8.454 cups. In British gallons, two liters are 0.4399.
How many gallons are in 100 liters?
One hundred liters hold 26.42 gal. A rain barrel or water tank rated at 100 L is therefore slightly larger than a 25 gal container. The same tank holds 22 British gallons.
