How to convert tons to pounds

pounds = tons × 2,000

Example: 3 tons × 2,000 = 6,000 lb.

Find out how many pounds are in a ton. Convert tons to pounds instantly, see a chart from 0.1 to 100 tons, get the exact formula and check a worked example.
On the scale, 1 ton lines up with 2,000 pounds; read any other amount straight across.

Multiply the tons by 2,000. Everyday fractions of a ton land on round numbers: a quarter ton is 500 pounds, half a ton is 1,000 pounds, and three quarters of a ton is 1,500 pounds.

When a weight is given in tons and pounds, convert the tons and add the loose pounds. 2 tons and 600 lb make 4,600 pounds in total.

Decimals work the same way: 2.35 tons is 4,700 pounds. To go back from pounds, use pounds to tons.

Checking a load against a weight rating

Say a supplier quotes 2.5 tons of gravel and your trailer is rated for 6,000 lb. Convert the order first: 5,000 pounds fits under the rating with room to spare.

If the quote is in metric tonnes, the same number means 5,512 pounds, which leaves much less room. Ask which ton the supplier uses whenever the figure is close to your limit.

When is a ton not a weight?

Some tons measure other things. NIST lists a ton of refrigeration, which is a rate of cooling, a register ton, which is a volume, and a ton of TNT, which is an amount of energy (NIST Guide to the SI, Appendix B.8).

None of these convert to pounds. Air conditioner sizes are given in tons of cooling (ENERGY STAR), so a two-ton unit weighs nowhere near 4,000 pounds.

Tons and pounds: questions

How many pounds is a metric ton?

A metric ton, or tonne, is 2,204.6 pounds. It is defined as 1,000 kilograms, so it lands a little above the US ton. When a figure is written with a lowercase t or spelled tonne, use this value instead of 2,000.

Why is a UK ton 2,240 pounds?

Both tons are built from twenty hundredweights, but the hundredweights differ. The US hundredweight is 100 lb and the British one is 112 lb, so the US ton comes to 2,000 pounds and the British long ton to 2,240 pounds, as the tables in NIST Handbook 44 show.

How many pounds is 10 tons?

Ten US tons are 20,000 pounds. If the tons are metric, the weight is 22,046 pounds, and ten British long tons are 22,400 pounds.

What does "short ton" mean?

It is another name for the US ton, which NIST also calls the net ton. The word short only matters when a long ton might be meant. On its own, a ton in the US is understood as the lighter, short one.
