How Many Liters in a Pint?

Divide US pints by 2.113, or multiply them by 0.4732. Either way, a US pint turns out to be a little under half a liter (litre).

Three pints come to 1.42 L, six pints to 2.839 L, and eight pints, which make one US gallon, to 3.785 L. Round to two decimal places for drinks and cooking. To go the other way, use the liters to pints converter.

If the pints come from a British source, switch factors first, because the imperial pint needs its own number.

A British pint holds 0.5683 L, a little over half a liter, while a US pint holds a little under. The difference starts with the ounces: a US pint is 16 fl oz, an imperial pint is 20 imp fl oz, and each country's fluid ounce has its own size.

To convert imperial pints, multiply by 0.5683 instead. Four imperial pints make 2.273 L, which is more than two liters.

When a package mentions pints, look at the metric figure printed next to it. US food labels must show metric units as well as US ones (FDA Food Labeling Guide), so a US pint of cream also reads about 473 ml.

In Great Britain, an imperial amount may appear on a label only alongside the metric one and no more prominently (GOV.UK). A British pint of milk therefore shows about 568 ml, and that number tells you which pint you are holding.
