How Many Teaspoons in an Ounce?

Multiply the fluid ounces by 6. The factor comes from two steps: an ounce holds 2 tablespoons, and each of those holds 3 teaspoons. Ounces here are US fluid ounces.

For 1/3 fl oz of almond extract, the math is 1/3 × 6 = 2 teaspoons. For 2/3 fl oz of lime juice, it is 4 teaspoons.

Once the answer passes 3 teaspoons, group the teaspoons into tablespoons. 1 1/4 fl oz is 7 1/2 teaspoons, which you can measure as 2 tablespoons plus 1 1/2 teaspoons.

Teaspoons barely change from country to country. The metric teaspoon used in the UK, Australia, Canada and New Zealand is 5 ml, and the US one is 4.93 ml.

The ounce changes more, since an imperial fluid ounce is only 28.41 ml. A British recipe that gives fluid ounces therefore needs slightly fewer teaspoons per ounce than an American one.

US food labels round both units. The federal labeling rule 21 CFR 101.9 counts a teaspoon as 5 ml and a fluid ounce as 30 ml, which keeps the ratio at 6 teaspoons per ounce.

When a small bottle of extract or hot sauce gives its size in fluid ounces, multiply by 6 to count the teaspoon doses inside.

A 2 fl oz bottle of vanilla extract holds 12 teaspoons. At 1 1/2 teaspoons per batch of cookies, that covers eight batches, and a 4 fl oz bottle, with 24 teaspoons, covers sixteen.

A spice jar is different. Its label gives ounces of weight, so the number of teaspoons inside depends on the spice, not on this conversion.
