Ounces to Pints (oz to pt)

Divide the US fluid ounces by 16. Drink sizes make good practice: a bottle of 20 fl oz is 1.25 pints, a sports bottle of 24 fl oz is 1.5 pints, and a jug of 40 fl oz is 2.5 pints.

If a decimal pint is hard to picture, stop at cups instead. Every 8 fl oz is one cup, so 20 fl oz is 2 1/2 cups, and each pint is 2 cups.

Totals above a pint are easiest in two parts: whole pints first, then the ounces left over. 50 fl oz is three pints with 2 fl oz to spare, or 3.125 pints.

A British pint holds 20 imperial fluid ounces, so the divisor for UK amounts is 20, not 16. The imperial ounce is also a little smaller than the US one, which is why the two pints end up so different in size.

Labels can mislead here. A US bottle of 20 fl oz holds 591 ml, a bit more than a British pint of 568 ml, so the same ounce count does not mean the same volume.

A water bottle of 16.9 fl oz is 1.056 pints, just over one pint. A bottle of 32 fl oz holds 2 pints, and a jug of 64 fl oz holds 4 pints, which is also a half gallon.

For a mixed haul, add the ounces first and divide once at the end. Three bottles of 16.9 fl oz and one jug of 64 fl oz come to 3 × 16.9 fl oz + 64 fl oz = 114.7 fl oz, or 7.169 pints. Rounding each bottle first would pile up small errors.
