How to measure blueberries accurately
Sort the berries first, picking out stems, leaves and any that are soft or split. Pour the rest into a dry measuring cup, tap it once on the counter so they settle into place, and level the top with your hand. Pressing blueberries down bursts the skins and turns part of the cup into juice.
A cup of round fruit is partly air, because the berries touch each other at only a few points. That is why a well-settled cup weighs a little more than one filled loosely, and why USDA's number is a guide for your cup rather than an exact weight.
Wash blueberries only if you can dry them well, since wet fruit carries extra water into the cup and then into the batter. Frozen berries stick together in clumps: break them apart and measure them frozen solid, because thawed berries soften and take up less room.
For muffins, pancakes and salads, a cup measure is plenty accurate. Jam is the exception, since its set depends on the balance of fruit and sugar, so weigh the fruit for it.

Pints, clamshells and dry pints
Clamshells labeled by weight convert to cups with USDA's figure for whole raw blueberries:
- 6 oz fills about 1.1 cups.
- 11 oz fills about 2.1 cups.
- 18 oz fills about 3.4 cups.
- 2 lb fills about 6.1 cups.
A 125 g punnet, as the small box is called in the UK, holds about 0.8 of a US cup.
The pint used on this site is the US liquid pint of 2 cups. NIST Handbook 44 also defines a US dry pint for dry goods, about 16 percent larger. A basket sold as a dry pint therefore holds roughly a third of a cup more fruit than a liquid pint.
Blueberries: questions
How many ounces is 1 pint of fresh blueberries?
About 10.4 ounces, or 296 grams, for a US liquid pint of whole berries. The pint holds 16 fluid ounces of space, but the berries weigh less than that much water because of the air between them.
Is a pint 8 oz or 16 oz?
A US pint is 16 fluid ounces, while 8 fluid ounces make a cup. Both figures are fluid ounces, a measure of volume. On a scale, a pint of blueberries comes to only about 10 ounces.
Is 1 pint of blueberries 18 ounces?
No, 18 oz of blueberries is more than a pint. By USDA's weight it fills about 3.4 cups, or 1.7 pints, so an 18 oz package holds most of a second pint as well.
Is a pint of blueberries 11 ounces?
Close to it. A liquid pint of blueberries weighs about 10.4 ounces, so an 11 oz box holds a little more than a pint, about 2.1 cups. A basket sold as a dry pint holds more still.
Does 1 pint of blueberries equal 1 cup?
No, a pint is 2 cups. A cup of blueberries weighs about 5.2 ounces, so a full pint of berries weighs twice as much as a cup. A recipe that lists berries by the cup needs half a pint for each cup.
How many blueberries is 1 ounce?
About 20 berries. USDA weighed a sample of 50 blueberries, which works out to a little under 21 berries per ounce. By volume, an ounce of blueberries fills about 3.1 tablespoons.
