Fluid Ounces to Grams (fl oz to g)

The multiplier above assumes water. For whole milk, use about 30.5 grams per fluid ounce, and for any other ingredient use its own weight per fluid ounce from the table below or the converter's ingredient menu.

Say a US recipe asks for 6 fl oz of whole milk and you would rather pour it straight into a bowl on the scale. The math is 6 × 30.5 = 183 grams. The same 6 fl oz of water would come to 177 grams.

Keep the ounce type in mind. A fluid ounce is a volume on a measuring cup, so this method is for liquids and spoonable foods measured by volume.

A UK recipe that lists fluid ounces means the imperial fluid ounce, which is a little smaller than the US one. Filled with water, it weighs 28.41 grams instead of the US figure above.

For a splash of vanilla the gap makes no difference. For bigger pours it adds up: 20 imp fl oz (one imperial pint, 568 ml) of milk weigh about 586 grams, while 20 fl oz in US measure weigh about 610 grams.

A fluid ounce is a slice of space, one-eighth of a US cup. How many grams it holds depends on what fills that space. Milk is a bit heavier than water, so each fluid ounce of milk tips the scale slightly further.

Powders go the other way. A fluid ounce of all-purpose flour weighs only about 15.6 grams, roughly half the weight of the same space filled with milk. That is why a baker who swaps a scale for a measuring cup, or the reverse, needs a figure for each ingredient.

If a coffee or tea recipe gives water in grams but your mug or kettle is marked in fluid ounces, convert once and write the numbers down. A 10 fl oz mug holds about 296 grams of water, and a 16 fl oz pitcher about 473 grams.

To pour by weight, set the empty mug on the scale and press tare so the display reads zero. Then pour until it shows the gram figure, with no measuring cup to rinse afterward.
